Granganimeo Shows the Way to Roanoke

The English really only had one thing in mind and that was to find Roanoke--the island of white shell beads.  Granganimeo was a man that lived there.  They were informed by him of its location.

Soon they visited the little island.  It was absolutely hidden unless you had instructions on where to find it.  Barlowe knew this was the place.  His job was to find a hidden, protected area...and here it was before them.  Granganimeo accompanied them and when they reached Roanoke, his wife came running out to meet them.  She invited them into a large building where they housed other visitors.

Probably out of hospitality, she then took the mens clothes and washed them, while water was brought to them so they could wash their feet.  They were then fed out of a huge food supply.  They had tea, but did not know how to describe its taste as they had never had anything quite like it before.  This is because the drink had not gotten to England from China yet.

A more kind and loving people cannot be found in the world.

This quote was written in Barlowe's journal.

They stayed another month before heading back to Europe for they had found Roanoke.

These shells are what the Secota made their small, flat beads out of.  The kind of shell is called the Whelk shell.
