The Final Piece of Hope is Killed

    While still on the island, John White came upon the skeleton of one of Ralph Lane's troops.  He was kept by the fort to help guard it along with fourteen others which had vanished.  There was no clue on where they could have gone.  Now White knew that there was no hope.  They couldn't even rely on help from the fort.  All of the houses that Lane and his men had built were falling apart and were overgrown with vegetation.  The colonists tried to repair them and make shelter for themselves but they all understood that there was no chance of survival for this was Roanoke Island.
