The Secotan Appearance

05/12/2008 17:42

Two days after the English arrived, the Secotan people inhabiting the area allowed themselves to be noticed for the first time.  They were on the beach...almost as if they had no fear in their strange visitors.  Barlowe accompanied by several other men rowed ashore to meet them.  One of the Secota men that approached them was clearly their ambassador for he only spoke. They were reported to be many things that they could not understand.

The English finally gave him a shirt and a hat to show their thanks.  Because of that, the man then went and fished for Barlowe and the others.  He took his canoe out and fished, filling his boat.  They were amazed at how fast he was as it took less than half an hour.

When people heard this story later on in London, they were astounded at what had taken place.  There were people living there already?  And how could they fish so fast and efficiently?

Large numbers of Secotans came to visit over the next few days.  Soon the explorers were understanding things such as their language, the land, and the names of people and places.  Barlowe stopped trying to recognize or describe anyone.  There were just too many people trying to trade with each other.  The Secota people showed no fear in any way.  This is beacause they were bordered by many other countries and were very used to foreign people.

There was one special thing that Barlowe and Amadas learned, but didn't think to pay any attentiont to.  The Secotan people had a leader-Wingina, who was otherwise known as Pemisapan.  Well, he has been around during the time of the English visit but was recovering from harsh battle wounds.  He had been shot three times by arrows.  If they had put thought into this news, they would have figured out that something was not going right on Roanoke.  Whenever the two groups traded, the Secota traders were always after weopons and other items used for fighting and war.
